To strenthen handmade cotton lace so it can withstand the casting process, we dip it in nearly boiling wax, which allows the fragile woven pattern to be preserved forever in sterling silver, bronze, or gold. Think of the way candle wax drips on a table cloth- this stiffening allows us to set the shape and curve of the lace and cast from there.
